Horticulture Crop Expansion

Karnataka is one of the leading states in the entire country in horticulture crop expansion. Horticulture farming in the state has got its own unique place and is being transformed into commercial crops that give high profits to the farmers. Horticulture plays an important role in the economic development of rural farmers by providing employment opportunities, high sustainable income to farmers in rural areas.

A large number of farmers' economic status is largely dependent on rain-fed agriculture. Crop yields are not guaranteed due to the uncertainty of rainfall. So, when suitable fruit plants are adopted in dry farming, they will yield half of their yield potential in the absence of rain and give a fixed income. Besides, horticulture provides employment after harvest.

The weaker section families should be encouraged to expand horticulture crops that provide sustainable and long-term income. But the expansion of horticulture crop requires a lot of investment and technology in the beginning. In view of this Mahatma Gandhi NREGS, horticulture department is being integrated with the extension of horticulture crop to more beneficiaries. For this, more than 30 horticulture crops have been allowed to expand zone wise and thousands of farmers are making good use of it.
