Agriculture Department

Conservation of natural resources such as soil, water, biomass and vegetation is of utmost. In some regions, the impact of land degradation has increased due to heavy rains, deforestation and unscientific land use practices, which has made a direct impact on the productivity of agricultural products. Some regions are rendered unproductive due to soil degradation, and its conservation has become a major challenge for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Soil erosion needs to be prevented through various land use and management practices, and the already degraded soil needs to be revitalized. This leads to enhanced biodiversity, provides opportunities for livelihood activities, clean water, decrease in soil erosion by providing different land use opportunities in these regions, thus helps in increase of soil fertility and moisture, leading to improved food production.

Every drop of rain water that falls, need to be harvested and used adequately. Sustainable production and ecological balance can be maintained by implementing planned watershed activities to conserve soil and moisture, biomass and forests as in ridge to valley. Under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), water conservation can be done along with prevention of soil erosion through various treatments in watershed pattern from ridge to valley.

Under MGNREGS, 65% of the works under taken have been earmarked for Natural Resource Management (NRM). In this background, the “Jala Sanjeevini” watershed program has been formulated under the MGNREG scheme.  In collaboration with various Government agencies, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) including NRM works using Geo-Spatial technologies will be prepared and the works will be implemented in various phases. The main objective of the programme is to raise ground water level and maintain ecological balance through natural conservation. It is today necessary to implement the said programme in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture/Watershed Development and with convergence of all schemes.
